Any dental emergency like an injury to the teeth or gums can be potentially serious and should not be ignored. Ignoring a dental problem can increase the risk of permanent damage as well as the need for more extensive and expensive treatment down the road. The doctors of Distinct Dental are highly trained in treating all common emergencies, including toothaches, chipped or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, extruded (a partially dislodged tooth), objects caught between teeth or under the gum, lost fillings, lost crowns, lost temporaries, broken braces wire, abscesses, TMJ pain, swelling, and soft tissue injuries to the lips, cheek, and gum. One of the most important aspects in avoiding dental emergengies is knowlege and continual preventative check ups which falls intothe general dentistry services category.
Cosmetic dentistry is an aspect of modern general dentistry services that allows us to conservatively restore your teeth back to their natural strength and beauty. It also allows us to enhance the appearance of your smile by closing gaps, straightening crooked teeth, restoring worn and chipped teeth, and whitening your teeth for a more youthful, clean and healthy looking smile. Whitening: This is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic procedures. At Distinct Dental we use the Zoom Whitespeed whitening . Tooth discoloration can result from aging, smoking or drinking coffee, and genetic factors. If you would like to restore your smile to a healthy, bright smile, Dr. Rafiei offers both at-home teeth bleaching and 1-hour in office whitening. A bright smile can now be yours! Restoring: Fixing alignment, gaps, cracks or stains can be done through various procedures such as Invisalign®, porcelain veneers or dental bonding. These methods are all different from one another, but are designed to produce the same results: beautiful teeth and a healthy-looking appearance.
Veneers are an excellent way to redesign and reshape your entire mouth. Veneers are a very thin ceramic shell that covers your existing tooth structure. In placing these new veneers on your teeth, you are able to fix the look of issues such as staining, cracked teeth, spaces, misaligned teeth, chipped teeth and many other issues. The Veneer process takes approximately two to three visits to complete. During the first visit, we will discuss your expectations and goals for the shape and look of what we are going to accomplish by placing the veneers. Once we have put a plan in place, we will carefully prepare the teeth for the placement of the new veneers. As we complete this piece of the process, the next step is to take an impression of the newly prepared teeth. This impression will be sent to our laboratory for the final product to be fabricated. We only utilize the highest standard laboratory for fabrication of all of our work. While the new veneers are being fabricated at the lab, we will provide you with a beautiful temporary solution to wear during this time.
Crowns are traditional and commonly used restorations in general dentistry services today. They are the treatment of choice when teeth are badly broken, extensively decayed, or simply in need of replacing existing caps. Crowns can be made of all porcelain, porcelain fused to gold, or all gold. The best crown material is often determined by an individual’s bite and esthetic considerations. A bridge is a prosthetic device which is cemented onto at least two teeth. These two teeth help support the prosthetic tooth which is used to replace the missing tooth. When you have a missing tooth, we prepare the teeth which lay on either side of the missing space. A bridge is made to be cemented onto the two neighboring teeth and then a prosthetic tooth is placed in between. This prosthetic tooth is supported by its neighbors. This is the typical way of permanently replacing missing teeth.
Dentures: Dentures are a replacement for missing teeth that can be removed and put back into your mouth as needed. Depending on each individual patient case, they may either receive full or partial dentures. Full dentures are used when all of the natural teeth are removed from the mouth and replaced with a full set of dentures. There are two types of full dentures:
Conventional Full Dentures: This is when all the teeth are removed and the tissue is given time to heal before the dentures are placed. It could take a few months for the gum tissue to heal completely, and during this time you will be without teeth.
Immediate Full Dentures: Prior to having your teeth removed, the doctor takes measurements and has dentures fitted for your mouth. After removing the teeth, the dentures are immediately placed in your mouth. The benefit is that you do not have to spend any time without teeth. You will, however, need to have a follow up visit to refit your dentures because the jaw bone will slightly change shape as your mouth heels. The dentures will need to be tightened after the jaw bone has healed.
Partial dentures: are another option when it is not necessary for all teeth to be removed. This is similar to a bridge, but it is not a permanent fixture in your mouth.
Wisdom teeth extractions are a fairly common procedure. Wisdom teeth often cause problems as they are trying to protrude through the gums. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it means the tooth is coming in at an angle and not straight through the gum line. This can cause pain, the tooth can come in unevenly, or the tooth may only emerge partially.
When a wisdom tooth only emerges partially a flap of skin, called an operculum, may form over the tooth. This can make the tooth hard to clean, and pieces of food may be caught under the skin. This makes it easy for an infection, called pericoronitis, to develop. Impacted teeth and wisdom teeth that can potentially cause problems, like infections, need to be removed. Extractions can range from a single tooth, to removing all four wisdom teeth at once.
Sedation dentistry benefits patients with high fear, traumatic dental experiences, difficulty getting numb, a bad gag reflex, very sensitive teeth, and complex dental problems. Nearly 30 percent of Americans are afraid of the dentist and avoid dental care at all costs, even when they are experiencing discomfort or pain. Thanks to sedation dentistry, and the skilled dentists at Distinct Dental, it doesn’t have to be that way.
Distinct Dental offers various levels of sedation form Light Nitrous Oxide “Laughing Gas” to moderate Oral and IV Sedation. Our doctors have been trained in IV and Oral Sedation, have completed Advanced life support and have combined hundreds of hours of Continuing Education in Emergency management and conscious sedation. If you feel that sedation is necessary or just preferred for your dental care, call us 281-378-3331. Our goal is for our patients to be comfortable and calm, and to ultimately end the fear that so many patients currently feel.
How You Will Feel: Patients feel that they have slept through the appointment, and most patients don’t remember any part of their treatment. Patients usually recall the end of the appointment when we are getting them ready to go home. You will need someone to bring you to our office on the day of your sedation appointment and you MUST have someone take you home afterwards.
Safety: Safety is our priority. We continue to advance our knowledge and skills in sedation techniques and procedures. Every sedated patient is continuously monitored to assure their blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart and respiratory rates remain at a safe and comfortable level.
Our mission is to provide a dental experience that makes kids say, “I can’t wait to see my dentist!” Our philosophy on treating children is to develop an environment for children and teens that is fun and non-threatening. We move very slowly to gain their trust before any dental procedures are done. Dr. Rafiei creates beautiful smiles and healthy teeth and gums for children of all ages by providing a safe, relaxing and fun environment for children and parents! We understand that some children have a fear of going to the dentist. While attending to the oral health of your child is our main focus, we combine that with our goal to make the experience a comfortable and positive one, to build trust with your child by treating your child as we would one of our own. We know that one traumatic dental experience can last in the mind of a child for a lifetime, so our mission is to prevent any upsetting or traumatic experience from occuring. If children and teens learn dental health from an early age, they will be able to maintain a healthier lifelong smile. We pride ourselves and specialize in family oriented general dentistry services.
A missing tooth is the most obvious dental malformation, and often presents the dentist’s biggest technical challenge. Missing teeth can also undermine a person’s self-confidence and quality of life. Not only can missing teeth compromise eating habits, speech and appearance, the condition can also lead to bone loss in the jaw and the abnormal shifting of the other teeth as well as bite problems. Missing teeth often causes the look of premature aging. The doctors of Distinct Dental have had great success in replacing missing teeth with dental implants. Using the latest advanced materials and technology, we are able to provide the service that is most appropriate for you. Dental implants have become our favored way to replace missing teeth whenever possible. Acting as a substitute tooth root, implants bond with the bone to form a stable foundation for permanent replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The dental implant actually helps preserve the bone by providing the stimulation that was previously provided by natural tooth roots. This helps maintain the integrity of facial structures. There are numerous advantages of dental implant treatment over other traditional treatment options. For instance, it is not necessary to grind down the adjacent teeth for a bridge, or secure a partial denture to them with clasps that can eventually loosen the natural teeth. By utilizing dental implants, patients may be spared the many problems associated with traditional false teeth.
“Root canal” has been a scary term for dental patients to hear, but the benefits of the procedure and advances in dental technology have made it much less “scary”. When a tooth becomes infected it is usually related to the nerves in the root of the tooth. The infected nerves need to be removed, and if left untreated an infection can turn into an abscess, which is a much more serious problem that includes bone loss in the jaw. First, the area around the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic to start the procedure. The dentist will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. The infected tissue will then be removed and the canal will be able to be cleaned. After the infection has been removed, the space is filled with a sealant called gutta percha. The procedure will relieve the patient from pain caused by the infection, and allow the patient to enjoy all the foods you love without any pain from heat, cold, or biting too hard. It is highly recommended that a tooth that has undergone a root canal is fitted with a crown. This will improve the appearance of the tooth, and will also make it much more likely that the root canal is successful. If you are experiencing pain consult us today 281-378-3331.
Temporal-mandibular joint dysfunction more commonly known as TMD, affects more than fifteen percent of American adults. Common symptoms include an uncomfortable bite, pain in or around the ear, headaches, bruxism (grinding of the teeth), tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening and closing the mouth, and even neck aches. Other TMD symptoms may include: facial pain, tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, difficulty chewing, locked jaw, inability to bite all the way down, limited mouth opening, changing bite, tinnitus (ringing in ears), muffled ears, worn down teeth, loose teeth, broken teeth, gum recession, bone loss around the teeth, clenching or bruxing, and dizziness.
There are many causes of TMD disorders including traumatic injury to the chin, jaw, or TMD itself, missing back teeth, and/or poor alignment of the jaws, poor alignment of the teeth, arthritis, stressful situations, normal tooth wear over time, or poor dental treatment that adversely affected the bite to a more open or closed position than normal. These disorders often lead to clenching of the teeth during the day and grinding of the teeth while sleeping (Bruxism), which in turn causes a great deal of damage to the teeth and the TMD itself. Failure to treat TMD dysfunction early on, can lead to serious damage of the joint and possible need for surgical intervention.
Headaches are one of the most common symptoms of TMD disorders. 40 million Americans who suffer from headaches may have been improperly diagnosed. “Migraines”, tension headaches, and sometimes even “sinus” headaches are diagnosed based on subjective symptoms reported by the patient, sometimes leading to incorrect diagnosis and treatment. Medical specialists may not be aware of the link between the bite and headaches. Most people with this condition were not aware of what a correct bite felt like because they always had a conflict between their teeth and jaw. We are trained to determine whether there is a link between headaches and the bite for individuals we see with headaches. We can treat these problems without medicine with appliances and by helping the bite fit better with various treatment modalities including bite analysis, equilibration, night guards, and occlusal splint therapy.
